The Mission of ASSI '08 is to develop and promote Suzuki Method by providing excellent short term educational opportunities for all the members of the Suzuki String Instrument Community: Children, Parents and Teachers. ASSI is a special opportunity for children, parents, grandparents, teachers and Master Teachers to come together in a happy, nurturing environment to share music making and inspiration.

Children and teenagers have inspiring classes with Master Teachers. For Parents, special presentations and drop-in classes are offered throughout the week. Professional Development courses, observations and pedagogy breakfasts give Teachers opportunities to exchange ideas, network and develop professionally. Daily Newsletters, displays, and music stores make materials and information readily available to everyone. Concerts and Recitals give performing and listening opportunities to everyone!

Programs at ASSI ‘08 for twinklers and up (children under 12 attend with a parent):

  • 4 hours of scheduled classes per day for 5 days
  • optional drop-in classes
  • play-in and concert on day of registration
  • perform in a noon hour recital after a short rehearsal with pianist
  • final Friday evening concert

Types of Classes:

  • Master class - This is an hour long class where each child receives a short private lesson every day in front of the other students. Students have a chance to learn from each others' lessons without feeling the pressure of having to do it all themselves.
  • Group class - Children at a similar level of playing work with a Master Teacher and accompanist to explore technique and musical devices using the Suzuki Repertoire in fun and imaginative ways. The Group Class runs everyday for one hour.
  • Pre-reading class - This class is for Children who do not yet feel comfortable reading music at sight. They explore basic concepts needed to develop music literacy.
  • Orchestra -There are 3 levels of string orchestras at the Institute. Children are placed according to how advanced and fluent their sight-reading of music is. If children are very comfortable with the level of music reading demanded, they enjoy this very much. Experienced and fun loving conductors make this hour long daily rehearsal fun.
  • Option - Teachers highly trained in their own fields, such as Creative Movement, Theatre Arts, and Art, teach wonderful hour long classes. Children are put in classes according to their preference, priority sequence and availability in their timetable.
  • Drop-in Class - This class is offered several times during the day for everyone. In different years we have offered Choir, Folk Dancing and Improvisational drumming. This year's class is to be announced.
  • Recital - Every participant is invited to play at a noon hour Recital. A short rehearsal is scheduled for each player with an experienced accompanist before the recital. Each player signs up at registration with the piece he or she intends to perform. If the player wants to perform a piece outside the Suzuki repertoire, the music must be provided to the accompanist at the time of registration.
  • Play-in - This is a wonderful and fun "happening" where all the players get together with all the teachers of their Instrument and explore making music together - Twinkle to Advanced repertoire!

Come and join in the rich learning environment of the Alberta Suzuki String Institute!
